Further Notes
Considerable uncertainty surrounds the closure date of this section of line and the location of this station. Unsurprising perhaps, given the fact that it was such an early closure and the railways were in their infancy. Also given the fact that stations were little more than street stops, usually adjacent to an inn and/or a road crossing, very much reflecting their stagecoach origins.
DRS is the only publication I have so far studied that records a specific closure date. RPSGB states "steam-hauled service began 7 September 1833 from Bridge Road, short of point used earlier". This would imply a corresponding closure date for the 1st Stockton.
Cobb records "Stockton 1st (S&D) Horses Only 1848" - the same closure year as Stockton 2nd.
Other publications make no reference to this early station.
Likewise, the location of Stockton 1st is uncertain. RPSGB p498 states that the railway "would utilise the Black Lion Hotel and the New Inn Stockton".
The recently published British Railway Stations 1825 - 1900 shows the "assumed location" of Stockton 1st as adjacent to Ingledew's Wharf and Martin's Wharf, approximately 36c N of Stockton 2nd (aka St. John's Crossing).
