Further Notes
ACD - Wed 19/06/1844 - DSW. DRS gives 18/06/1844; RPSGB gives speculative date of 15/04/1844. Some confusion appears to relate to the opening dates of the 'Old Main Line' - the Newcastle & Darlington Junction Railway - between Belmont Junction and Rainton Crossing, and the line between Belmont Junction and Durham Gilesgate. The former opened on 19/06/1844 and the latter on 15/04/1844. A service was operated between Gilesgate and Belmont prior to the opening of the main line. See RHRGB Vol.4 The North East p163.
British Railways Stations 1825-1900 shows the location of Rainton Meadows station much further south, marked 'X' on the map. Again, as the DSW entry states, in common with many early stations, the facilities, such as they were, were probably rudimentary, making exact location difficult to identify.
Any further information welcome.
