Further Notes

ACD - ?/02/1853 - CPLGB p53.

Some uncertainty surrounds the exact location of the Wishaw & Coltness Railway Morningside station and exactly what services, and when, operated.

RPSGB suggests that the original W&C Morningside station was located S, on what later (1900 - Cobb) became the Chapel Colliery branch. The original service on the Wilsontown, Morningside & Coltness Railway line from Longridge operated to the W&C Morningside station, apparently including a reversal.

The later CR Morningside station opened on 15/05/1867, which is when the line from Newmains was opened. However, Cobb shows only the one station, on the site of the later CR station, and gives the opening year as 1845, suggesting the original W&C station and the CR station were on the same site. This is almost certainly incorrect.

RPSGB states under the entry for Morningside (W&C) "original service from Coatbridge; trains from Bathgate began 2 June 1845**, using same station and reversal; see 1848** for later history. Later services used new stations." New stations presumably being the CR and NBR stations respectively.

Morningside (NB) opened 19/09/1864 according to RPSGBCobb unfortunately does not give an opening year.

Railscot website Morningside 1st gives perhaps the clearest account of the early history of the line and confirms broadly the information in RPSGB

Suffice is to say that, for the purpose of this website entry, the line between Garriongill Jct. and Morningside closed to passenger services from Feb 1853. The exact location of Morningside (W&C) is uncertain, but it is possible it was located on what became a branch when the line was extended eastwards in 1844. This is supported by references to the trains from the east having to reverse into the station, though whether this is based on contemporary accounts or supposition is not known.

Research ongoing - any information welcome.
