This line was opened on 01/07/1865 to coincide with the improvements made to the Whitby & Pickering Railway to allow the introduction of steam traction to replace horse power. The curve allowed direct running between Scarborough and Whitby but the service was short-lived. According to D. Joy (ibid) the service comprised "cheap excursion trains", implying these were not RTS.
