Built by the Lancashire Union Railway as part of a through route avoiding Wigan a passenger service was introduced from Liverpool terminating at Whelley on 01/01/1872. It proved unsuccessful and was withdrawn two months later, which must be one of the shortest-lived passenger services on record. See RHRGB Vol 10 The North West p102.
The line continued in use primarily for freight, but also by excursion traffic avoiding Wigan until complete closure in 1973.
