Further Notes
ACD - Fri 01/03/1872 - CPLGB p19; RPSGB.
A passenger service was operated over this line, (actually a waggonway), but it does not appear to have been fully publicised in the main timetables. However, DSW Springwell does show an extract from B Feb 1863 giving a brief description of the service, sufficient to warrant its inclusion on this website!
Cobb does not mark the line as a 'public railway', but C and DSW both list Springwell and Jarrow in their list of station closures.
Springwell station was located in the 'V' between the main line and a short spur from the P&JR. Its sole purpose was to act as an interchange station, but it does not appear to have been included in the relevant 'main line' timetables.
The line closed to passengers with the opening of the line from Pelaw Jct. - Harton Jct. via Hebburn and a replacement station at Jarrow.

*Mileage calculated using OS map measuring tool.
Subsequent study of OS maps reveals that the original route to Jarrow, shown on the 1858 OS map above, was rerouted at its northern end towards Hebburn, according to the 1894/5 OS map, also shown on the map above. This must have occurred sometime between closure to passengers in 1872 and the survey of the latter map in 1894/5. I appreciate this is not relevant to the passenger services and dates, but it is included to avoid any possible confusion. Any further information/confirmation welcome.
