*1911 connection - Chatham (Central) - 1m 11c; Strood Jct. (SER) - Rochester Bridge Jct. (Toomer Loop) - 0m 16c.
Following the merger of the South Eastern Railway with the London, Chatham & Dover Railway to form the South Eastern & Chatham Railway in 1899, the Chatham Extension was considered an unnecessary duplication and subsequently closed. The SER bridge was retained in favour of the LC&D structure (see Rochester Bridge (LC&D)) and tracks were slewed either side of the bridge to facilitate this. Consequently, the Rochester Bridge Jct. - Strood Jct. section of line, known as the 'Toomer Loop' was taken out of use.
However, a fire on the SER bridge in 1919 brought about the temporary reinstatement of the LC&D bridge and the 'Toomer Loop' until repairs were effected in 1922. See Rochester Bridge (SER).
See Kent Rail - Rochester Bridge for a full description.
