*RCH D 1922. Estimated mileage from divergence points.

This is unusual in having "divergence points" at both ends of the section of line.

At the east end, the line ran parallel with the Sunderland line from Cemetery North Jct. as far as Hart. It is difficult to pinpoint exactly where the divergence point should be. The lines clearly parted company to the northwest side of Hart station. The RCH map shows a distinct kink in the line to Sunderland to the southeast as it appears to avoid Hart station. Studying photos of the station suggest this is correct as the platforms on the Castle Eden line are of brick/stone construction, whereas those on the Sunderland line are of wood, implying the latter were provided as an afterthought. This kink in the earthworks is clearly visible from the air on Google Earth. It is this point I have decided to designate, as the line essentially shared the same formation from here back to Cemetery North Jct., a distance of approximately 1m 27c.

To the west end, this is more clear cut. The line from Ferryhill North Jct. clearly shared the same formation as the parallel routes to a point approximately 32c north, at which point it deviates slightly to the east and begins to rise on a separate embankment in order for the Waterhouses branch to clear the main line it crosses to the west.

**Further to the above, Hart station remained open for services towards Sunderland until CL - Mon 31/08/1953 - RPSGB.
