Further Notes
TCD - Mon 04/05/1942 - PNM 1980 p12; DRS. Date RTS withdrawn and intermediate stations closed. No Sunday service, LTR - Sat 02/05/1942. This appears to have been, publicly at least, a temporary wartime economy measure. The service was never resumed until:
OCD - Sun 01/03/1953 - when the closure was made official and permanent.
However, the line continued in use by SDS and excursion trains. From Sat 11/07/1953 a summer Saturday Leeds - Barrow-in-Furness service was introduced, avoiding Carnforth, conveying a Windermere portion which was detached at Arnside and worked through to Windermere via Hincaster Jct.
A return service operated from Windermere via Arnside and Carnforth until:
LTR - Sat 31/08/1963. See Services Operated above.
A Cumbrian Railway Album L R Gilpin Cumbrian Railways Association p34 shows the Windermere portion at Arnside as it negotiates the crossover from the Barrow line on to the Hincaster Jct. line. See also Kendal Tommy - A History of the Arnside-Hincaster Branch, Dave Richardson which, in addition to some interesting photos, also gives a detailed account of these workings.
Thanks to a correspondent for drawing this to my attention.
