This line and Market Harborough - Peterborough (see Great Bowden Jct. [Market Harborough] - Peterborough (Fletton Rd.) Jct.) illustrate the difficulty in defining precisely a "Line of Route". Administratively, the entire line from Rugby - Peterborough was one line of route, reflecting ownership and services operated. Physically and practically, the section of line from Market Harborough station to Great Bowden Jct. was common to the Midland Railway main line with which it ran parallel. The LNWR station, shown as separate from the MR station on the RCH map, was again physically and practically part of the same station. RPSGB, DRS, OS Maps and other sources record the station as 'LNWR and MR Joint Station'.
To complicate matters further, Market Harborough No.1 Jct., usually shown as the point at which the Rugby and Northampton lines parted company, was situated immediately south of the LNWR platforms. In practice, the two lines continued for approximately 16c SW on the same formation to the physical point of divergence.
Fortunately, the dilemma of how to present these sections of line is settled by the fact that the short section of line from the divergence point to Market Harborough No.1 Jct. remained open to a later date, (see Northampton No.4 Jct. (divergence point) - Market Harborough (excl.)).
