Further Notes

OCD - Mon 18/12/1967; ACD - Sun 22/05/1966 and special bus operated, to facilitate construction of the Tay Road Bridge, until OCD - RPSGB

Conflicting dates from various sources; PNM 1980 p88 W give OCD - Mon 18/09/1967; Forgotten Railways - Scotland D&C 1976 p26 states "Tayport - Newport East was closed completely on 18 December 1967 on the encroachment of the Tay Road Bridge works....".

Other sources suggest line closed completely from 18/09/1967.

BR (ScR) TT 6 Mar 67 ufn and 4 Sep 67 - 5 May 68 both show Tayport under 'Rail-road link' section with bus link from Newport-on-Tay (East) (Table 18).

Finally, to confuse matters even further, RM Oct 1966 p577 "BY the FIRTH of TAY" Panorama feature shows a photograph of Tayport station with track clearly lifted beyond the platform, signalbox and level crossing. The caption reads "Track had been lifted between Tayport Station (left) and Newport by July 4". Unfortunately, the photo depicts the line looking west towards Newport, the lifted section being east from Tayport towards Leuchars Junction, closed from 09/01/1956. The caption editor has confused Tayport with Newport-on-Tay (East), despite correctly identifying the station depicted as Tayport. Clear? One consolation, the feature does state that the service had "been cut back to Newport because the route is crossed by the new road bridge over the Tay..." and dates the photo as July 4 (1966).
