Further Notes

This section of line, along with the line beyond to Turnberry (excl.) CL 02/04/1933 - see Alloway Jct. - Turnberry (excl.). Alloway Jct. to Heads of Ayr (2nd) RO 17/05/1947.

Closure date is LTR - Sat 14/09/1968 (see below). SDS services, summer Saturdays only, operated throughout.

BR(ScR) 6 May 68 - 4 May 69 Table 9 shows last day of service as Sat 07/09/1968. This is supported by RM Aug 1968 p494 which states "...Saturdays-only service ... will be withdrawn after the last train of the season, on September 7". However, RPSGB entry for Heads of Ayr station states "last train to camp 7 September 1968; last return train Saturday 14 September 1968 (RM August)".

Mercifully, BLN 113 p2 clarifies the situation thus, "As Butlin's Camp is not closing until Saturday 14th September, limited services will operate on this date. The service will be a 0910 and a 0952 from Heads of Ayr, forming the 0930 Ayr/Kilmarnock and the 1010 Ayr/Glasgow respectively. This follows the practice of the last couple of years".

Both PNM 1980 p50 and DRS give OCD - Mon 16/09/1968. Was this an offically designated closure date or an assumed date based on LTR - Sat 14/09/1968?
