Further Notes

OCD - Sun 10/09/1972. Date LTR* - RPSGB.

It is debatable whether this qualifies as a 'Line of Route'. Physically the pier station was essentially a platform forming part of Craigendoran station. RCH Edinburgh & Glasgow 1920 supports this, showing Craigendoran 'Sta. & Pier' as one station. However, Cobb's atlas shows the pier as a separate line (though not as a passenger station) and BLN 217 p1 and SRS RailRef NB438 also record it as a separate line from the named junction.

A deciding factor should be the service that operated and whether it appeared in the public timetable, but even this is debatable. No distinction is made between Craigendoran and Craigendoran Pier railway stations. Craigendoran Pier only appears as such in earlier editions of Bradshaw's and only in the table for the sailing times, not the trains. In the 1972-3 BR (ScR) timetable most sailings are served by the scheduled Airdrie to Helensburgh Central trains. However, there are a few trains shown as terminating and starting from Craigendoran - presumably the 'Pier' station/platform.

The October supplement makes no mention of the closure of Craigendoran Pier station. It would appear that the last train from the Pier station/platform was the *2120 Craigendoran - Bridgeton connecting out of the 1945 sailing from Rothesay on Sunday 10/09/1972.

Feeling generous, I have given it the benefit of the doubt.
