Knowle Jct. and signalbox were located at the point where the Meon Valley line diverged from the main Fareham to Eastleigh line. The lines from here to the divergence point north of Fareham Tunnel were in fact two independent parallel lines, with the west-most double tracks from Eastleigh to Fareham via the deviation route and the east-most single track from the Meon Valley line to Fareham via Fareham Tunnel. (See Butts Jct. - (divergence point)* [Alton] - Knowle Jct. (divergence point)* [Fareham] and also RHRGB Vol.2 Southern England D&C p124 and The LSWR in the Twentieth Century D&C p74/5 for more detailed information.)
